Why do probiotic trials sometimes show variable results?

The use of probiotics may show variability in the success and benefits of the product where:

  • Probiotic microorganisms may be destroyed by the use of certain in-feed antibiotics (non-compatibility)
  • Birds or animals are not stressed and will therefore have a complete microflora which cannot be further improved by the use of probiotics
  • Management has been compromised on the farm.
  • Farmer is not using the probiotic as he should – i.e. he does not understand the concept of probiotics and how best to use them
  • Any final response is always dependent on the rate of pathogenic challenge and stress of the animal or bird.
  • Farmer is not using the correct quantity of Protexin.
