Launch of Pro-Balance - the first probiotic dog food!Dogs presenting the common clinical signs of upset, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite and weight loss are one of the most common reasons for a dog to be brought to the vets. The beneficial effect of probiotics on GI disorders by providing an influx of beneficial bacteria to the unbalanced gut has been extensively documented. As has the fact that, in acute cases, dogs respond well to dietary management following a short period of 'gut rest', as an essential aid to a recovery programme recommended by the vet.
Over the past two years, Protexin Veterinary have been researching and developing a high quality therapeutic veterinary GI diet to further support these dogs and has now launched Pro-Balance. This is the first such diet to contain an added probiotic. The Protexin probiotic Enterococcus faecium has undergone extensive testing to ensure the bacteria maintain effective viability during manufacture, transportation and storage, and consumption and transit through the large intestine.
The highly digestible and palatable chicken and rice formulation of Pro-Balance also contains Protexin Preplex, a multi-sourced prebiotic, added in an equal combination of frutooligosaccharides (FOS) and arabinogalactans, to provide a prebiotic effect across the whole of the GI tract.
Designed to work in conjunction with Pro-Kolin+, feeding Pro-Balance, as an alternative to traditional non-probiotic diets, means that the influx of probiotic bacteria is maintained for a longer period to give a more complete protocol in the management of acute GI cases. Protexin recommends feeding Pro-Balance for five to seven days following or with Pro-Kolin+ administration before transitioning back to the dog's usual food.
Pro-Balance is low in fibre, has low to moderate fat levels to ensure high digestibility and features Omega 3 fatty acids to help reduce gastrointestinal inflammation. The diet is GM free, gluten free, does not contain artificial colours and is available in two pack sizes of 1kg and 3kg.
