Synopsis

Targeted Hind Gut Support: Protexin Gut Sponge

Gut Sponge is a premium nutritional supplement specifically formulated to support the equine hindgut. It is the ideal choice for owners seeking a hind gut supplement for horses that encourages the formation of normal, firm droppings.

The Science of Psyllium and Bentonite

The effectiveness of Protexin Gut Sponge lies in its high-fibre psyllium husks. These husks absorb water within the digestive tract, creating a "sponging" effect that helps regulate transit and protect the gut lining.

  • Psyllium Husks: Act as a prebiotic and energy source for beneficial bacteria.
  • Bentonite: A natural binding agent and source of essential minerals.
  • Linseed: Provides Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for general wellbeing.

Why Use an Equine Hindgut Supplement?

Maintaining hindgut health is vital for horses prone to digestive fluctuations. Gut Sponge for horses can be used alongside Gut Balancer for comprehensive probiotic support. Our 1.5kg formula is peppermint flavoured for maximum palatability and is BETA NOPS accredited, ensuring it is a safe, high-quality choice for all horses.

Directions

50g (1 level measure) mixed with feed twice daily for 7-14 days. Then once daily as required or as recommended by your veterinary surgeon. Dampen feed with water prior to feeding.

Gut Sponge can be used in conjunction with Gut Balancer for probiotic support.

Unless under veterinary supervision do not exceed recommended levels, or feed with other products containing bentonite. Simultaneous use alongside oral macrolides should be avoided.

What’s the difference between Gut Balancer and Gut Sponge?

Gut Balancer contains a palatable probiotic and unique dual source Preplex® prebiotics. It is specifically designed for horses and ponies. Use daily to support digestive function and efficiency and for general wellbeing.

Can Gut Sponge be used alongside Gut Balancer?

Yes. Both Gut Sponge and Gut Balancer support hind gut health, but by different mechanisms. The addition of Gut Balancer provides probiotic and additional prebiotic support. They can be fed together, but when you're feeding Gut Sponge once daily it's best to feed Gut Balancer at the opposite end of the day.

Can Gut Sponge be used with Gut Bind?

Whilst it would be safe to feed both products together, Gut Sponge and Gut Bind support gut health in a similar way. It would be better to feed Gut Balancer alongside Gut Sponge to provide additional probiotic and prebiotic support.

Can Gut Sponge be used alongside other Protexin products?

Yes. It is safe to feed Gut Sponge alongside all other Protexin products. For more information on Gut Balancer and Gut Bind see above; for other products, or to ask a specific question about your horse please get in touch with our technical team.

What is a macrolide?

Macrolides are a class of antibiotics, including erythromycin, clarithromycin and others. Smectite clays are known to bind macrolides and stop them from working. It is therefore not recommended to use Gut Sponge alongside oral macrolides. However, macrolides are very rarely used in horses - except when treating Rhodococcus equi infection in foals. If you have any doubts, please speak to your vet.

What are prebiotics?

A prebiotic is a non-digestible carbohydrate (complex sugar) which acts as a food source for beneficial bacteria and therefore stimulates their growth.
